Aldous Huxley s Brave New World Freedom - 1236 Words

If given the choice to live a life of either freedom or oppression, most would choose freedom. However, in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New world freedom is an option none of his characters possess. Due to the global depression in the 1920s and 1930s, Aldous Huxley warns of individuality and self-perseverance in Brave New World. World war 1 and the great depression had a large impact on BNW. Figures of WWI provided material to BNW like†[Benito Mussolini who] led an authoritarian government that fought against birth control in order to produce enough manpower for the next war, [which] provided materials for huxley’s dystopia†(Somaweb.org). Seeing that birth control has no existence in the book Huxley took a different approach in the book. Once the great depression sets in â€Å"people longed for the kind of economic security that Huxley gives to the citizens of his fictional world.†(Stdt nov. ). Those who were going through difficult times, but didn’t realize the disadvantages Huxley included especially longed for their perfect utopia. However, technology seemed to flourish around this time†items like electric irons, toasters, refrigerators, air-conditioners, radio, television and vacuum cleaners†(Scott). The items we have acquired now have really been taken for granted considering how life was back in the 1920s. What Makes A Excellent Mental Health Nurse - 1564 Words

For the purpose of this assignment, these students have chosen the article, â€Å"What makes a excellent mental health nurse? A pragmatic inquiry initiated and conducted by people with lived experience of service use† (2013). For this written critique we have decided to use Polit and Beck’s (2010), ‘Guide to an overall critique of a qualitative research report’ that was presented within the resource, ‘Essentials of Nursing Research: Appraising Evidence for Nursing Practice’. This guide was chosen due to our familiarities with this tool, as well as the methodical, linear nature and ease of use. This tool is supported by Boswell and Cannon (n.d), when they show support for Polit and Beck’s (2013) statements, that nurses who engage in critical nursing research reviews make valuable contributions to the improvement of nursing knowledge. In addition, we also choose to utilize Polit and Beck’s framework due to their reputation and signi ficant contributions within the area of nursing research. Therefore, it is believed that this is a suitable tool to use for this assignment when critiquing the title, abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion and global issues of the selected article. The Branding Strategy for Apple-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Questions: 1.What is the Apple brand Value Proposition? 2.What is the Apple brand Positioning? 3.What is the Apple Brand Strategy Vs Its Competitors?+ Is the strategy always consistent? 4.Does the Apple brand really provide distinct characteristics/benefits? If Yes, How does the brand work the differentiation to be perceived as different? Answers: 1.The value proposition ranges among various elements. One of the key value propositions is offering unique and distinctive experiences. All the Apple products are being built on believe that they will not just be the bunch of various updated features and technologies like their competitors (Osterwalder et al., 2014). Rather they are being offered as a simple to use and aesthetic device. Thus, the design being inherited by Apple in their products is unique and distinctive, which set them apart from their competition. Another value proposition being offered by Apple is the user experience. While, other competitors are more concentrating on enhancing the utility of their products, Apple is more into enhancing the user experience of their products (Kotler Keller, 2016). This enables the Apple users to have a distinctive image in the crowded market of electronic gadgets. All these value propositions help them to be a premium player in the niche market. 2. Low price The above positioning map of Apple is being created in order to define the brand positioning of them. Apple has positioned their products as a more aesthetic and lifestyle products rather than competing in the crowded market with offering more features. Moreover, Apple is being positioned as premium player targeted towards the niche market (Kapferar, 2012). Thus, according to the requirement and preference pattern of the top of the pyramid customers, Apple is being positioned as more lifestyle and innovative product than being a feature rich device. Figure: 2 The economic pyramid According to the above portrayal of the economic pyramid, Apple is being positioned for the top of the pyramid. Thus, they are catering to small amount of niche market around the world. 3.The branding strategy for Apple is different and distinctive compared to its competitors in the market. This is due to the reason that, the branding strategy of Apple concentrates more on emotions of the customers. They promote their products as a lifestyle product, which will be innovative along with having great aesthetic values. Thus, the products are being promoted in such a way that, brand personality of Apple is being promoted as lifestyle products rather than being a mere electronic device (Jian Wang et al., 2012). This also made the customers believe that owning any Apple products will enhance their social status and standard. Thus, the branding strategy of Apple is not limited to promoting the features of the device rather than associating it with the lifestyle of the customers. On the other hand, major competitors of Apple are more concentrated towards offering more features in their products along with offering the products in different variants. Thus, the branding strategy of the competitors is more products oriented rather than consumer oriented approach of Apple. The branding of the products of Apple is more concentrated towards the identifying the imagination and aspirations of the customers (Strebinger, 2014). The branding strategy of Apple has been evolved with time but the basic objective and approach remained same and consistent. This is due to the reason that, from the introduction of the first product of Apple, they are concentrated towards innovations and lifestyle branding strategy. Accordingly, they have introduced new products in the market, which will suit the current market requirements along with maintaining the basic objectives of branding by targeting the aspirations of the customers. 4.If the analysis is being by comparing the basic utilities of the products of Apple and their competitors, then there is nothing difference among them. However, still Apple as a brand provides distinctive benefits compared to their competitors. The first aspect of differentiation between Apple and others is the brand personality. For instance, if the customers are using the products of Samsung, then they will have the opinion that, they are using devices having updated features and latest technologies and having cost affordability. However, on the other hand, customers using the products of Apple will have the opinion that, they are using luxurious products, which will enhance their social status regardless of the features in the device (Ries Ries, 2002). Thus, Apple as a brand is deviating the brand personality of the customers from determining the basic features to determining the standard and social aspirations. In terms of pricing also, branding of Apple is differentiating them from other products. This is due to the reason that, during the initiation of the buying process, customers tend to relate the pricing of the products with their offered features and quality. However, branding of Apple motivate the customers to pay more price without determining the features of the devices. Thus, Apple as brand is making the product features and characteristics secondary. The Hitchickers Guide...3 Essays - , Term Papers

The Hitchickers Guide...3 The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. Thought many of the concepts are slightly abstract and obscure, the book itself is a truly great work. The basic idea is that the day we meet our adventurous crew is the single worst Thursday of Arthur Dents life. Sadly, it is not just Arthur who will be having a bad day. You see, it is this Thursday when the earth gets destroyed. Of all the billions of people on the planet, there was only one who knew what was to take place, and he himself was not even from earth. Ford Prefect, best friend of Arthur is a smooth talking quick thinking person for the remote planet of Betelgeuse five. As you were probably able to infer, Ford Prefect was not the name given to him by his parents, but instead the name of a car that was never popular, which he chose as his moniker, as to better fit in with the humans of earth. Our story begins with Arthur waking up early at his London flat (it was a British book). This was just like any other Thursday, except that outside, a demolition crew was beginning to destroy his house so that they will be able to create a highway bypass. This was news to Arthur. He did not know how they could do this without even warning him first. Upon questioning the foreman of the job, he was informed that the plans had been on record in the planning office for months. Sadly, the plans had been kept in the cellar where there is no nights, or stairs for that matter, in a disused lavatory, in the bottom of a locked file cabinet, with a sign that says Beware of the leopard. Arthurs decision at this point was to lie in front of the bulldozer, so that, without killing him, it would be impossible to destroy the house. Just at this point, Ford Prefect enters the scene. He tells Arthur that it is imperative that he goes to the bar with him, because after he tells him the news, he will need a stiff drink. Arthur explains the situation, and quickly Ford comes up with a plan. He makes a deal with the for eman that, since with Arthur there, they would not be able to do anything all day, they have resolved to just stand around and do nothing all day. So, it was not important weather or not Arthur was actually present. So they agreed that they would not knock down his house until he got back. Arthur could not decide whether or not to trust him. Ford assured him he could trust him to the end of the earth which was about ten minutes. Unknown to Arthur, ford was a writer for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a type of encyclopedia chronicling the high and low points of every planet, and how to get about them for free. He had been doing research on earth for the last several years. Recently he had received a transmission over his sub-ether radio, which told him what was to take place in just a few short minutes. Arthur and Ford hurried off to the bar, and Ford explained what was about to happen. Ironically, the planet was set to be destroyed in order to build an interstellar bypass. And who better to destroy the planet, than a fleet of Vogons. The Vogons were a race from the outer edges of the spiral arm. They had virtually no conscience, worked for cheep, had hugs ships of mass destruction, and had perfected a type of poetry which was so horrific, when read, the writer's small intestine has been known to crawl out of their throat and strangle them. Well, the Vogons came, and made short work of our blue/green planet, but before that happened, Arthur and Ford were able to hitch a ride and stow away on one of the Vogon vessels. As you would assume, Arthur is fairly confused at the whole situation. Ford explains to him that he is from the planet of Betelgeuse, which, as anyone would suspect continued to surprise and confuse

Reflective Essays

Reflective Essays Reflective Essay Reflective Essay Essay Topic: Reflective Clinical arrangement is a good opportunity for nursing pupils to pattern clinical accomplishments. every bit good as experience the existent on the job environment. However. the procedure of really conveying theories and cognition learned from university into practical application is non simple ; this requires non merely forbearance and finding but besides assorted larning accomplishments. For myself. after an unpleasant experience of affecting an statement between a nurse and patient’s household. I came to recognize that brooding accomplishments are important non merely for my current position as pupil but besides for my future professional development ( Sharon. 2014 ) as registered nurse. The brooding pattern helps nurses to keep and invariably update their cognition. every bit good as concept clinical accomplishments by larning from existent pattern ( ANMC 2009 ) . As described by O’Donovan. reflective is a procedure of deliberative thought. looking back. analyzing oneself and one’s pattern in order to better hereafter practice ( Chris A ; Sue. 2013. p. 4 ) . In this essay I will reflect on my unpleasant experience and show how this could be used as an grounds to turn out how brooding activities efficaciously assist nurses with professional development. This contemplation will follow Gibbs brooding theoretical account. which describes the experience. my personal feelings ; so analyze and evaluate on my actions. bespeak what were my strengths and failing. Finally. a elaborate action program will be formed for future pattern. In the text edition Reflective Practice in Nursing it is recommended that each reflector should take and utilize brooding technique that suits their learning manner ( Chris A ; Sue. 2013 ) . I chose Gibb’s contemplation theoretical account as it was the most suited technique for both my acquisition manner and my form of believing. As a ocular scholar. I learn best with visual image and head function. My ideas and actions are easy affected by my feelings. Derived from the rule of experiential acquisition of Kolk. Gibb’s theoretical account of contemplation ( 1988 ) includes six stairss: description. feelings. rating. analysis. decision. and action program. The first measure enables my idea to flux. leting me to visualize the whole experience while seting aside my ain judgement. By making this I can reexamine the state of affairs with a clear non-biased head. The 2nd measure helps me to research my form of thought and how my emotions consequence my actions. These two stairss will provide me with comprehensive subjective information for the undermentioned stairss of the theoretical account. For this ground I decided to utilize the Gibb’s theoretical account to reflect on my following state of affairs. The state of affairs happened when I was making my arrangement at the pneumonic rehabilitation ward in a infirmary. Mr X was admitted to hospital about few yearss ago with aggravation Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease ( COPD ) . As per my normal everyday I was taking the patient’s critical marks. When I came to Mr. X bed. I saw Mr. X was locating straight up on his bed ; his married woman was feeding him. The BiPap machine was taken off. and he was on normal rhinal cannula. I asked Mrs. X what happened and why he stopped utilizing the BiPAP machine. due to the fact that Mr. X oxygen impregnation was a spot low so he would be on BiPAP machine for today. which I heard during the handover activity meeting this forenoon. Mrs. X told me that it was because Mr. X was really hungry. and the Bipap’s machine mask is excessively big. covering both his olfactory organ and oral cavity. which prevent him from eating. So she took the BiPap mask out and put the normal rhinal cannula on in order to feed him. She said she would set the BiPap machine back instantly after the breakfast. and it would non be long. I was convinced by her words and confident. Then I started taking Mr. X’s critical marks. The consequence was 90 % for his O impregnation. lower than the standard 1. I checked his medical record and found out that he has modified oxygen impregnation rate. and his current 1 was still in the safe scope. I observed Mr. X visual aspect. asked him a few inquiries to corroborate his physical and mental status. Mr. X looked rather stable. his voice was clear. and he ate a batch of nutrient. However. I was still worried for Mr. X’s safety. so I decided to remain at that place. waiting for Mr. X to complete his repast. to guarantee that nil went incorrect and the prescribed equipment would be used. During that clip. I on a regular basis checked his O impregnation. I notice that Mr. X’s oxygen impregnation started to drop really easy. I raised the concern to Mrs. X. but she told me to non worry. as Mr. X about finished his repast. She claimed that they were utilizing that machine at place so she knew it really good. As I did non cognize much about BiPap machine. I didn’t know what I should make. I was inquiring whether I should describe to the RN. when the RN came by and saw it. The nurse was really angry. She rushed in. rapidly took off the nasal cannula. set the Bipap mask on Mr. X. and blamed me aloud in forepart of all patients. Mrs. X and I tried to explicate that it was her who removed the Bipap mask because she wanted to feed him. The nurse said But your hubby needs oxygen more than nutrient. Mrs. X claimed that she was taking attention of her hubby for old ages and knew her hubby status really good. She said if he doesn’t have breakfast on clip. his blood force per unit area will drop. The nurse seemed to be so irritated with the whole state of affairs. she ignored what Mrs. X said and kept on look intoing on Mr. X and faulting me for non describing to her instantly. Approximately a few proceedingss subsequently with the Bipap machine on. Mr. X’s oxygen impregnation began to lift. When his O impregnation was up to 93 % . the nurse left. Mrs. X told me that nurse was ever unfriendly. and that she was sorry about what happened to me. I reassured her that I was all right and told her to take good attention of Mr. X so returned to my work. At the beginning of the whole things. I did experience that I should non allow Mrs. X take the Bipap machine. but I was non confident plenty to halt her from making so. I could non deny that I felt Mrs. X action might do some injury on Mr. X’s wellness. otherwise I would hold non stayed with him and someway I did experience I besides should take duty for allowing the whole state of affairs happen. Therefore. when the nurse came and found out the state of affairs and set the machine back on Mr. X face I felt much relieved. as I knew that was how things should be. However. when the nurse kept on faulting me aloud in forepart of others and disregarding the fact that I was non the 1 who really removed the mask. my feelings changed from ab initio experiencing guilty to experiencing defensive. After all it was non me who removed Mr. X’s Bipap mask and I felt I did all the things that I could by look intoing the patient. and following up his status closely. But the nurse did non take any into history. I started to hold with Mrs. X remark about the nurse’s unfriendliness. When I left the patient’s room that twenty-four hours. I was so angry. and believed that I did nil wrong at all. However. when my choler subsided. I reflected on the whole state of affairs and unhappily admitted that I was the 1 at mistake. First. I was at mistake for non steadfastly halting Mrs. X from taking the Bipap machine at the beginning. If I did so. the state of affairs would non hold occured. I thought there must be grounds that a BiPap machined was prescribed for Mr. X. It decidedly has some different maps than normal airing support equipment like a rhinal cannula. But as I did non hold any cognition about that. I have no steadfast ground or proper grounds to reason with Mrs. X. In add-on when Mrs. X stated that they were utilizing it at place and she knew it really good. I was convinced. and gave up. As a nurse. I owe the patient a responsibility of attention. but I indirectly put the patient in danger without acknowledging it. Second. I was besides at mistake for non describing it to the registered nurse in charge. I should ever retrieve that nursing is team work. Each squad member has duty to portion information that he or she obtained to the remainder of the squad. It will guarantee that a patient-centred attention would be planned and delivered comprehensively. The positive point in this whole state of affairs was that I decided to remain with patient and closely follow up his status. I did look into his critical marks and comparison with the patient’s medical record. I besides reflected on the nurse’s actions and picked out two errors. First. the nurse did non educate the patient’s household about the BiPap machine. I was non certain about the nurse’s relationship with the patient. so I did non take into history Mrs. X remark about the nurse’s unfriendliness. But I realized that the nurse did non explicate to Mrs. X that the biPap machine. called a bilevel positive air passage force per unit area machine. will make a supporting force per unit area which will assist her hubby equilibrating the sum of his inspiration and termination. to guarantee a suited heated humidified air flow to his lungs which a nasal cannula can non. ( Jamie. Cristina A ; Thomas. 2009 ) . I believe that if the nurse had explained. Mrs. X will understand exhaustively and will non reiterate that action once more in future. Second. the nurse did non really listen actively to patient’s demand. I can non deny that the married woman knew a batch about her husband’s modus operandi. wonts and even physical beat. She would be a really good beginning for the nurse in be aftering attention for the patient. It should be noted from the patient’s married woman that the patient’s blood force per unit area normally drops in the forenoon if he doesn’t eat at the regular clip. The ground might be non holding breakfast ; it may be some side effects of a drug or be a symptom for some implicit in status that should be considered. Then I started to analyze the whole state of affairs. and believe about what I should make otherwise. First. I should explicate to Mrs. X my concern. I should bespeak the fact that Mr. X’s oxygen impregnation was low. I should non experience abashing for non cognizing about that machine. All I need to make is merely merely bravely admit that I don’t know about Bipap machine. but I believe it is more necessary for Mr. X more than the rhinal cannula. I should pardon myself for non being able to give her a elaborate account and inquire her to wait while I check with the registered nurse or physician. I should utilize Mr. X safety to convert her. I believe if I had conducted myself in this manner. Mrs. X would hold listened to me and things would hold turned out wholly otherwise. Even If Mrs. X still insisted to take the machine. I should describe to nurse in charge instantly. Second. I should pattern to be more confident and actively take topographic point in attention squad. I am pupil at the minute Although I was pupil. I am still a member of attention squad. In future. I will graduate and go registered nurse. I should take this opportunity to larn from this state of affairs as it is normal for me to non cognizing everything. From the whole experience. I have learned that good communicating is really of import in presenting attention. Good communicating will guarantee the flow of information exchange non merely between nurses with patients. but besides between nurses and other members of the attention squad. In the relationship between nurses and patients. nurses need to actively listen to their patients. pick out necessary information. and construct trust with them. In this state of affairs. the nurse did non pay attending on Mrs. X statement about her husband’s blood force per unit area alteration. By the manner Mrs. X took attention of her hubby. I can experience that she truly wanted to be involved in caring for Mr. X. She decidedly would be a valuable resource. If the nurse can pass on in a more flexible manner. and supply her with proper instruction. the nurse will hold a particular and highly utile helper in taking attention of Mr. X. In the relationship between nurses and other member of at tention squad. nurses play a frontline function. As the 1 who straight care for patient’s day-to-day activities. in most instances. nurses will be the most suited one to roll up information and present this to the remainder of the wellness attention squad. In this state of affairs. although I collected all information about Mr. X. but as I did non present it. this information becomes useless. Despite how my head disquieted and cared for Mr. X. if I did non show my concern. and set it into action it is nonmeaningful. My choler at the terminal of that experience was really unreasonable. I can non presume that the nurse understood how much I cared if I did nil to demo that. Hence. I can corroborate once more that good communicating will be cardinal to construct common trust between wellness attention professionals and patients or patient’s household. which facilitate the bringing of attention and better the wellness result ( ) . After I reflected on the whole experience. I set up a proper action for the hereafter. Following clip. my end will be set up good relationship with both patients and wellness attention squad by pass oning efficaciously. Normally. the relationship between me and the patients seems good. The job is I am non self-asserting plenty. I will go to the presentation accomplishment short class held by Learning Devlopment Center and the Presentation Club in constructing 11. My mark is to better my assurance. larn how to get the better of being nervous when I province my sentiment or argue with person. I will besides go to the on-line class Terminology for international medical pupils at website coursera. org to acquire used to medical slang. Another of my jobs is a deficiency of cognition. Before my following arrangement. I will seek to do a list of medical equipment at my work topographic point and normally used medical specialty. I will make some research to obtain more thorough cognition in order that I would non fall into the same state of affairs. And in the instance I that I am diffident. I will non waver to raise the inquiries. My expected result at the terminal of my following clinical arrangement will be a more confident me. who is equipped with updated cognition. can pass on flexibly and incorporate good with wellness attention squad. In decision. utilizing the brooding procedure. I have identified my strength ( How much I care for patient ) . and failing ( deficiency of assurance. bad communicating ) . In add-on. I besides reflect on other’s actions and learned from that. Before the brooding procedure. the whole state of affairs was an unpleasant memory. but after contemplation. it becomes a memorable lesson. As the scientific discipline is developing non-stop. the contemplation will force me to continuously update and broaden my cognition.

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer John Atanasoff once said to reporters, I have always taken the position that there is enough credit for everyone in the invention and development of the electronic computer.   Professor Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry certainly deserve some credit for building the worlds first electronic digital computer at Iowa State University between 1939 and 1942.  The Atanasoff-Berry Computer represented several innovations in computing, including a binary system of arithmetic, parallel processing, regenerative memory, and a separation of memory and computing functions. Atanasoff’s Early Years   Atanasoff was born in October 1903, a few miles west of Hamilton, New York. His father, Ivan Atanasov, was a Bulgarian immigrant whose last name was changed to Atanasoff by immigration officials at Ellis Island in 1889.   After John’s birth, his father accepted an electrical engineering position in Florida where  Atanasoff completed grade school and began  understanding the concepts of electricity- he found and corrected faulty electric wiring in a back porch light at the age of nine- but other than that event, his grade school years were uneventful. He was a good student and had a youthful interest in sports, especially baseball, but his  interest in baseball faded when his father purchased a new Dietzgen slide rule to help him at his job. The young  Atanasoff became totally fascinated with it. His father soon discovered that he didnt have an immediate need for the slide rule and it was forgotten by everyone- except young John. Atanasoff soon became interested in the study of logarithms and the mathematical principles behind the operation of the slide rule. This led to studies in trigonometric functions. With the help of his mother, he read A College Algebra by J.M. Taylor, a book that  included a beginning study on differential calculus and  a chapter on infinite series and how to calculate logarithms.   Atanasoff completed high school in two years, excelling in science and mathematics. He had decided that he wanted to be a theoretic physicist and he entered the University of Florida in 1921. The university did not offer a degree in theoretic physics so he began taking electrical engineering courses. While taking these courses, he became interested in electronics and continued on  to higher mathematics. He  graduated in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He accepted a teaching fellowship from Iowa State College because of the institutions fine reputation in engineering and sciences.  Atanasoff received his masters degree in mathematics from Iowa State College in 1926. After marrying and having a child, Atanasoff moved his  family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where he had been accepted as a doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin. The work on his doctoral thesis, The Dielectric Constant of Helium, gave him  his first experience in serious computing. He spent hours on a Monroe calculator, one of the most advanced calculating machines of the time. During the hard weeks of calculations to complete his thesis, he acquired an interest in developing a better and faster computing machine. After receiving his Ph.D. in theoretical physics in July 1930, he returned to Iowa State College with a determination to try to create a faster, better computing machine. The First â€Å"Computing Machine† Atanasoff became a member of the Iowa State College faculty as assistant professor in mathematics and physics in 1930. He felt he was well equipped to try to figure out how to develop a way of doing the complicated math problems he had encountered during his doctoral thesis in a faster, more efficient way. He did experiments with vacuum tubes and radio and with examining the field of electronics. Then he was promoted to associate professor of both mathematics and physics and moved to the school’s Physics Building. After examining many mathematical devices available at the time, Atanasoff concluded that they fell into two classes: analog and digital. The term digital was not used until much later, so he  contrasted analog devices to what he called computing machines proper. In 1936, he engaged in his last effort to construct a small analog calculator. With Glen Murphy, then an atomic physicist at Iowa State College, he built the Laplaciometer, a small analog calculator. It was used for analyzing the geometry of surfaces.   Atanasoff regarded this machine as having the same flaws as other analog devices- accuracy was dependent upon the performance of other parts of the machine. His obsession with finding a solution to the computer problem built to a frenzy in the winter months of 1937. One night, frustrated after many discouraging events, he got in his car and started driving without a destination. Two hundred miles later, he pulled into a roadhouse. He had a drink of bourbon and continued thinking about the creation of the machine. No longer nervous and tense, he realized that his thoughts were coming together clearly. He began generating ideas on how to build this computer. The Atanasoff-Berry Computer After receiving a $650 grant from Iowa State College in March 1939, Atanasoff was ready to build his computer. He hired a particularly bright electrical engineering student, Clifford E. Berry, to help him accomplish his goal. With his background in electronics and mechanical construction skills, the brilliant and inventive Berry was the ideal partner for Atanasoff.  They worked at developing and improving the ABC or Atanasoff-Berry Computer, as it was later named, from 1939 until 1941.   The final product was the size of a desk, weighed 700 pounds, had over 300 vacuum tubes, and contained a mile of wire. It could calculate about one operation every  15 seconds. Today, computers can calculate 150 billion operations in 15 seconds. Too large to go anywhere, the computer remained in the basement of the physics department.   World War II   World War II started in December 1941 and work on the computer came to a halt. Although Iowa State College had hired a Chicago patent lawyer, Richard R. Trexler, the patenting of the ABC was never completed. The war effort prevented John Atanasoff from finishing the patent process and from doing any further work on the computer. Atanasoff left Iowa State on leave for a defense-related position at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Clifford Berry accepted a defense-related job in California. On one of his return visits to Iowa State in 1948, Atanasoff was surprised and disappointed to learn that the ABC had been removed from the Physics Building and dismantled. Neither he nor Clifford Berry had been notified that the computer was going to be destroyed. Only a few parts of the computer were saved. The ENIAC Computer   Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were the first to receive a  patent for a digital computing device, the ENIAC computer. A 1973 patent infringement case, Sperry Rand vs. Honeywell, voided the ENIAC patent as a derivative of Atanasoffs invention. This was the source for Atanasoff’s comment that there is enough credit for everyone in the field. Although Eckert and Mauchly received most of the credit for inventing the first electronic-digital computer, historians now say that the Atanasoff-Berry Computer was the first. It was at an evening of scotch and 100 mph car rides, John Atanasoff also told reporters, when the concept came for an electronically operated machine that would use base-two binary numbers instead of the traditional base-10 numbers, condensers for memory, and a regenerative process to preclude loss of memory from electrical failure. Atanasoff wrote most of the concepts of the first modern computer on the back of a cocktail napkin. He was very fond of fast cars and scotch. He died of a stroke in June 1995 at his home in Maryland.

The Impact of global recession on microfinance in Asia.(approximate Assignment

The Impact of global recession on microfinance in Asia.(approximate topic) - Assignment Example Thus, micro finance narrowly deals with the provision of small loans to low income individuals to help them start small business ventures. Microfinance does not involve large loans as poor people seldom need large loans or want to start big business ventures. Microfinance advocates believe that providing access to finance can help poor people in getting the resources to help themselves out of poverty. Poor people are usually avid savers but they save in kind rather than in cash. Jewelry, gold, animals and building materials are examples of things that they save which might not always be turned into cash easily. If they require finance, they borrow from relatives or landlords and other informal mechanisms which are often exploitative. (Micro finance, 2008) The modern microfinance mechanism is accredited to Dr. Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh, the founder of Grameen Bank. He experimented with lending to poor women in rural areas and achieved great success due to high repayment rate and in terest rates. Although, bankers were unwilling to assume the risks and costs associated with micro lending, micro finance institutions succeeded in focusing on women and charging high interest rates that the poor were willing to pay. Although micro credit institutions have existed since the 1700’s, it wasn’t till Grameen Bank in 1983 that the approach to micro finance changed. Currently, it is considered a vital element in the eradication of poverty as it enables the poor to lift themselves out of their situation. (The history of Microfinance, 2006) The report covers the role and limitations of microfinance as well as the effect that the recession has had on this sector. It further takes Kazakhastan’s microfinance sector into account and the implications the downturn has had on it. The importance of microfinance: According to a study by Robinson (2002); 90% of the citizens in developing countries lack access to financial services from established institutions wh ether it is for credit or savings (Vincent, 2004). The impact of the financial sector on the economy and growth of the country is great and this unavailability of finance leads to the vicious poverty cycle of low investment, low productivity and thus low growth. Microfinance is a tool to empower the power, to provide them resources to invest in venture that will increase productivity and lead to economic growth. Although there are conflicting views to microfinance’s real contribution to economic growth and poverty alleviation it is a vital socio-economic tool. The importance of microfinance is that it focuses on the grass roots rather than on dev elopement from top. It focuses on the basics likes a woman getting a loan to set up a PCO and not on setting up industries; thus microfinance is within the grasp of the poor and does not require grand visions but rather baby steps. The investment of credit in an enterprise that leads to the generation of income increases economic gro wth and development. It not only leads to higher productivity but rather a higher standard of life. It expands income sources and increase aggregate demand thus has a multiplied positive effect on the economy and the lives of the poor. It is important to realize the importance of microfinance in providing income that is sustainable, the ventures that microfinance should focus on should be economically and environmentally sustainable to be successful so they help

Theater Preserving Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Theater Preserving Culture - Essay Example Theater supplies learners with skills that are creative, easily influenced and that easily fit changes and developments that enable them to express themselves, critically examine the world around them and actively engage in the different aspects of human existence (UNESCO p. 5) as audiences compare observations to real life situations. The concepts presented through the theater in a way, when placed side by side with the culture that is currently observed, can result to the creation of new morals and laws that can establish improvements in the practices of certain groups of people. The presentation of cultures on the stage offers enlightening information about peoples, explain what they do, why they do this or that, and in effect, making people aware of the existence of such and such culture. As the world now learns to embrace diversity, there is also a sense coming that cultural differences should be accepted as well. In fact, different cultures seem to spice up the lives of other cultures as they are presented, because in some ways, cultures are observed to be related with each other. This then leads to an even more interesting study of the origin of nations, tribes, clans and families which points to the centuries-old mystery of the origin of man. As cultures are expressed through the theater, people not only learn about them but through the artistic view of the audiences, some relevant improvements may come from them. The artistic abilities of viewers can be activated or improved through the replay of cultures in the stage.

The Presence of Black People in the Bible Essay Example for Free

The Presence of Black People in the Bible Essay Although not very important, I took the liberty this past month(Black History) to document my research to the age old question, Was Jesus Black, after a small debate with my auntie Angelina Quarterman arguing that He was a Jew, and Jews are White(lol). The typical Hollywood image in which ancient Israelites look like fair-haired White Americans is way off the mark. The people of the bible were Semitic(Afro-Asiatic languages) and would have been dark- skinned. The racial emnity equating Black with evil was an unfortunate development in later Europe, devised in part to justify African slavery. This topic of course has been a discussion almost since the introduction of Christianity to the western world. What color was Jesus Christ? I challenge those who may believe that Jesus was of White, Arabic, or Semitic(which doesnt consitute a race, but a group of languages and culture) descent to do some research. We must first begin by understanding that the first humans were black and were discovered in what is known today as Africa ( Akebu-Lan, which means Mother of Mankind to the natives of Africa or Garden of Eden). This name for Africa (Alkebu-Lan) was given to the continent by the Moors, Nubians, Numidians, Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians), and Ethiopians. The Muslims called it El Bilad es Sudan which translates as Land of the Blacks. You must also note that Africa was a name given by European conquerors, particularly the Romans/Greeks. There are many other names that Africa has been called by such as Kemet, Libya, Ortegia, Corphye, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Olympia, Hesperia, Oceania, and Ta-Merry. It was even called Aethiops which meant burnt faced people in Greek. Many also do not know that the original Hebrews were black-skinned people. Today we have terms used to describe blacks such as Negro or African which does little to say or prove the roots of black or darker skinned people. The term Negro was given to Blacks as they left Africa for the slave ships (ca. 1500 A. D. ). Negroland was also used by the Portuguese which means black land of course. This term was used to save them from having to call them by their true roots, which were Cushites, Nubians, Ethiopians, or Abysinians, in which they are called by in the Bible. These people were the founders of Christianity and Judaism in Alkebu-Lan, North Alkebu-Lan and Europe. What we have today is Western bias which has thwarted the history of the black race and it takes great study to get back to the truth. Even Moses (who married an Ethiopian woman) is commonly portrayed as an Eurasian or European. You also have people like Tirhaka, King of the Ethiopians, and as a Pharaoh was the fourth member of the Twenty-fifth Egyptian Dynasty that ruled Egypt from (730-653 B. C.). This man is commonly portrayed as European or White. Tirhaka was of grave importance to Israel in the days of Hezekiah. His armies were needed to stave off an impending Assyrian assault by Sennacherib. Furthermore we arrive at the question; What did Jesus of Nazareth look like? His Mother Mary was black/afro-asiatic and closely resembled those of Yeminite, Trinidadian, or African American descent of today. The perception of the Madonna and Child can also be challenged. In Matt 2:15 and Hos 11:1 we find Out of Egypt, I have called my son. This particular passage speaks about Mary and Josephs attempt to hide the one that King Herod feared would displace him. Can you imagine the divine family as Europeans hiding in AFRICA?!? There are literally hundreds of Shrines that depict the Black Madonna in many parts of North Africa, Europe, and Russia. These are but uncanny reminders of the original people who inhabited ancient Palestine. Watercolors and marvelous oils of the painters brush has recast the image and rebirth Jesus as a European. Medieval and renaissance artists (such as Michaelangelo) made him suitable for a European form of Christianity. You even had people like Shakespeare have a hand in editing the the King James Version of the Bible. Again people will argue Jesus was Semitic, but again this is a group of languages that include both Hebrew and Arabic and NOT a racial type. It is ironic that the term Semitic was created at around the same time the Middle East was created. It is as they sought to simply de-Africanize the sacred story of the Bible by disconnecting a part of Africa. In my final analysis I would like to provide evidence that Jesus was of African descent based on the descriptions given in the Bible as regard to appearance. Dan 7:9 reads I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of Days did sit, who garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. We all know that blacks have hair that closest resembles that of wool. We continue on to Rev. 1:13-15: And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and His hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire; and His feet unto like fine bronze as if they burned in a furnace; and His voice like the sound of man waters. I can go on and on and continue to prove my point, but as of now you can decide for yourself.

A Brief Overview of Feminism Essay example -- essays papers

A Brief Overview of Feminism Feminism can be roughly described as a movement that seeks to enhance the quality of women’s lives by impacting the norms and moves of a society based on male dominance and subsequent female subordination. Although feminist literary writings began to gain popularity in the 20th century, feminist characters have been around for ages. â€Å"Feminist criticism’s self transformations over the past several decades as it engages with both critiques from within and encounters from without- encounters with psychoanalysis, Marxism, Post-Structuralisms, ethnic studies, post-colonial theory, and lesbian and gay studies- have produced a complex proliferation of work not easily subsumed to a single description. (Rivkin 527)†. According to Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan in their essay â€Å"Feminist Paradigms†, feminist criticism includes several other ideas. Gayle Rubin, author of â€Å"The Traffic in Women: Notes on the ‘Political Economy’ of Sexà ¢â‚¬ , also adds: The literature on women- both feminist and anti-feminist- is a long rumination on the question of the nature and genesis of women’s oppression and social subordination.† Some of the earlier feminist characters include Kate, from The Taming of the Shrew and The Wife of Bath from the Canterbury Tales. Unfortunately, during their times these women were viewed as either crazy or troublesome. There was little respect for their opinions and ideas. Trailblazers such as Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, and Geo...

Learning outcome Essay

Understand diversity, equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility 1.1.1There are two models that link with equality, diversity and inclusion, the first one is the social model of disability which views discrimination and prejudice as being embedded in today’s society, their attitude’s and their surrounding environment. The social model focuses on who the adult is as person not what their disability or diagnosis is, the focus is on how to improve and empower the individual’s life and lead a more independent life as possible. The second model is the medical model of disability which views adults has having an impairment or lacking in some way, this model focuses on impairments that the adult has and finding and acknowledging ways to correct them. The client group at my current place of work are adults with mild learning disability and some of the residents have a dual diagnosis of mental health issues as well. Both the social and medical model has an impact on their daily life. The companys’s ethos is to empower the residents and in able them to lead a normal life as possible. This is done by providing and engaging them in their own individualised person centred plans and asking their opinions on what they like how they like it etc. allowing them to make informed choices for them self and whether they have the capacity to make these decisions. 1.2 Analyse the potential effects of barriers to equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility The potential effects that the residents will experience in this care setting are prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice happens when society lacks education and the understanding of different cultures and how society looks at it. Prejudice begins by making assumptions of a certain client group i.e. people with learning disability and mental health issues are put into a certain box. 3.1 Analyse how systems and processes can promote equality and inclusion or reinforce discrimination and exclusion †¢The Equality Act is a legislation that is in place to ensure that people are given equal rights and opportunities regardless of their age, gender, disability, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation. This legislation promotes diversity, equality and inclusion by making it a requirement that they are commonly practiced and incorporated into the health and social care setting, making it illegal to discriminate against a person/or persons for any reason. The main Acts incorporated into the Equality Act 2010 are; †¢ The Care Quality Commission †¢ The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 †¢ Human Rights Act 1998 †¢ The Equal Pay Act 1970 †¢ The Sex Discrimination Act 1999 †¢ The Race Relations Act 2003 If these code’s of practice and legislations where not to be followed the consequences can be diverse. They can effect just one individual or can effect an entire team of social care workers. By not following the codes of practice and the legislation you could cause a service user to feel discriminated against which would have negative effects such as making them feel isolated or un-heard and could lead to more problems that would effect the people around them as well as the individual . By not using inclusive practice you may find that the service user might be put in a situation in which they are not happy which could make them act out in a way that could effect their future and how other team members interact with them. †¢ [The service has a low number of service users from other black and cultural backgrounds †¢There are few staff members from black and cultural backgrounds (I have recently recruited a female member of staff who originates from Ghana ) †¢Some service users display prejudice by refusing support from a balck worker †¢Waiting for a disabled woman to be clear through the CRB process to become a volunteer focusing on media and creative writing. †¢Decision making processes for service users through the person centred plans which for some of the people in the service I manage still are powerless as staff determine outcomes for the person especially for people with limited communication. There are a number of people who are institutionalised and because they are older this is unlikely to change. †¢Staff attitudes towards women for example saying â€Å"Hey girl† I respond to this by saying my name is Alison and I manage the service. I feel there islittle respect of people’s positions within the organisation. There needs to be teaching of prof essionalism staff using appropriate language when in the work place. I feel undermined as a woman †¢Work policy systems for discrimination †¢Simple changes as everyone using the same mugs and staff having drinks at the same time as people who use the service. †¢Equality Act 2010 is the law that bands unfair treatment and helps achieve equal opportunities in the work place and wider society. †¢Promote – cultural diversity social work student on 9 week placement from the Check Republic unable spend quality time with her to discuss how the service †¢Ankar Hindu temple celebration of their 8 night festival †¢Health & wellbeing day promotion of healthy Asian finger foods for many people who attended the day this was a new experience including myself. 3.2 †¢it is important to promote equality and explain without causing offence why some practices are unacceptable â€Å"The key anti-oppressive component of personal ands social history discussed in chapter one understanding and valuing the cultural and spiritual heritage of families and communities within which individuals are situated, but recognising the continually changing dynamics of that experience.† (Burke, Clifford 2009:11) Anti-Oppressive ethics and values in Social Work Derek Clifford and Beverley Burke †¢Creating an environment to learn through music and singing for example gospel choir. †¢The organisation is predominately white with its origins from the Christian Brothers established in Belgium. Their principles for caring for orphaned children and children with disabilities. †¢As a manager it is important to ensure that people are given the opportunity to make informed decisions Burke, B. Clifford, C. (2009) Anti-Oppressive Ethics and Values in Social Work, Palgrave Macmillan 3.3 †¢Organise different cultural days /celebrations †¢Recruit more volunteers from cultural background †¢Out reach work with other cultures and religions allowing people to gain insight into how other people live. 4 Be able to manage the risks presented when balancing individual rights and professional duty of care. 4.1 The people I am responsible for have varying degrees of learning disabilities therefore their level of understanding in some cases is limited owing to their life experiences. †¢The majority of people have never had the opportunity to make informed decisions. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 states that you can make decisions acting in persons best interests. †¢Duty of care ensuring a person is not put at risk and keeping people safe. It is difficult for some staff to understand the power they hold and †¢don’t always make the best decision for the person. 4.2 †¢Informed choice this is giving people the appropriate information to make a decision. †¢It has to be in a format that the person understands such as easy read pictorial as most people who I support have limited literacy skills. Using pictures are and basic sign language can help. †¢Service user group meets monthly chaired by the people who use the service to discuss what happens in the service 4.3 †¢Individual capacity is based on a persons IQ and socialisation from childhood to adulthood most behaviour’s are learned. The people I support in most cases have been with the organisation since childhood there fore are institutionalised so decision making is very difficult for them. It is almost subservient wanting to please the member of staff by agreeing through repeating what the staff member had said. You could argue that the people we support are conditioned to give their personal power away to staff. There are minority of staff who say they acting in the person’s best interests but are actually exploiting their power. 4.4 Propose a strategy to manage risks †¢Financial policy when handling peoples personal monies ensuring they are supported to handle their own money to the best of their ability. †¢Assess the persons capacity level of understanding †¢Work on a life skill guiding the person through decision making stages †¢Write a risk assessment for each activity undertaken. †¢Travelling alone in taxis ring the person’s home first to check support staff are there. Ring for taxi. Support person into the taxi give taxi information on whether the person can talk confirm address and that a member of staff will meet the person at the final destination and pay. ing person’s home to inform they have left in the taxi give the taxi company details, description of driver and car.

Music in the Roaring Twenties

MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT IN THE ROARING TWENTY’S [pic] ? Introduction The 1920s known as the â€Å"Roaring Twenties† were a time of great change, economic growth, mass production, urbanization (farmers moved to larger industrial cities), cars, telephone, radio, record players and prohibition. It was a period of a new freedom for women. It was for Americans and western Europeans, a break period from the first world, a time for happiness and peace. Finally the Wall Street Crash of 1929, ended this period as the Great economic depression set in worldwide. The Roaring Twenties were the first golden age of the American music and often known as â€Å"The Jazz Age†. This â€Å"movement† in which jazz music grew in popularity, also influenced other parts of the world. However prior to the Jazz, dance was to dominate all forms of music. ? America export Music to the world When the American dancer Josephine Baker visited Berlin in 1925, at the time when Francis Scott Fitz gerald published the Great Gatsby in the US, she performed at the â€Å"Theater Des Westens† and found it dazzling. The city had a jewel-like sparkle,† she said, â€Å"the vast cafes reminded me of ocean liners powered by the rhythms of their orchestras. There was music everywhere. † Eager to look ahead after the crushing defeat of World War I. The music played in Berlin, Amsterdam, London, or Paris, mostly originated from small towns in America. ? Origins of music in the ‘roaring twenties’ Following World War I, around 500,000 African Americans in search of better employment opportunities moved to the northern part of the United States. They left their home towns of New Orleans, (Louisiana), or Saint Louis (Missouri), Kansas City (Missouri)†¦ With them, they brought their culture to the North in places like Chicago (Illinois), Detroit (Michigan), Cincinnati (Ohio), Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), and York City (NY) which became the place for the â₠¬Å"Harlem Renaissance† During this period of time, the works of African Americans in fields such as writing and music escalated. Styles of music including Dixieland and blues became popular as well.Throughout the 1920's many people took an interest in music and in dance. They owned pianos, trumpets, saxophones, drums, bass, guitars, clarinets, trombones and played sheet music, listened to records and visited theatres, and dance clubs. With the help of radio broadcasting, new artists become famous all over the United States and for some around the world. ? Dance clubs in the 1920’s Dance clubs became enormously popular in the 1920s. Dance music came to dominate all forms of popular music by the late 1920s. Classical pieces, operettas, folk music, etc. ere all transformed into dance music in order to please young people much as the disco phenomena would later do in the late 1970s. For example, many of the songs from the 1929 Technicolor musical operetta The Rogue Song (st arring the Metropolitan Opera star Lawrence Tibbett) were rearranged and released as dance music and became popular club hits in 1929. Dance clubs across the U. S. sponsored dance contests, where dancers invented, tried, and competed with new moves. Professionals began to perform in tap dance and other dances across the United States. With the advent of talking pictures (sound film) musicals became the main attraction. Film studios flooded the box office with new musical films, many of which were filmed in ‘Technicolor’ ne of the most popular of these musicals, ‘Gold Diggers of Broadway’ became the most known film of the decade. Harlem played a key role in the development of dance styles. With several entertainment venues, people from all walks of life, all races, and all classes came together. The ‘Cotton Club’ featured black performers and catered to a white clientele, while the ‘Savoy Ballroom’ catered to a mostly black clientele . Popular dances & Musicians The most popular dances throughout the decade were the: foxtrot, waltz, and American tango. From the early 1920s, however, a variety of eccentric novelty dances were developed. The first of these were the Breakaway and Charleston. Both were based on African-American musical styles and beats, including the widely popular blues. The Charleston dance became popular after appearing along with the song, â€Å"The Charleston,† by James P. Johnson in the Broadway musical Runnin' Wild in 1923.Although the origins of the dance are obscure, the dance has been traced back to blacks who lived on an island off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina (which is why the dance is called â€Å"Charleston†). A brief Black Bottom dance, originating from the Apollo Theatre in Haarlem (NY), swept dance halls from 1926 to 1927, replacing the Charleston in popularity. By 1927, the Lindy Hop, a dance based on Breakaway and Charleston and integrating elements of tap , became the dominant social dance. Developed in the Savoy Ballroom, it was set to stride piano ragtime jazz. The Lindy Hop would later evolve into Swing dance. These dances, nonetheless, were danced by small groups of people. The majority of people continued to dance the foxtrot, waltz, and tango. On the singing side, top singers were Nick Lucas, Scrappy Lambert, Frank Munn, Lewis James , Gene Austin, Franklyn Baur, Johnny Marvin, and Ruth Etting. Leading orchestra leaders included Bob Haring, Harry Horlick, Louis Katzman, Leo Reisman, Victor Arden, Phil Ohman, George Olsen, Ted Lewis, Abe Lyman, Ben Selvin, Nat Shilkret, Fred Waring, and Paul Whiteman. ? All that jazz in the 1920’sHowever, despite all these trends and forms of music, the most known would remain the Jazz. Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in black communities in the Southern United States. It was born out of a mix of African and European music traditions. One name, o ne of the most famous jazz musicians of all time, is worth mentioning. Louis Daniel Armstrong (1901 – 1971), from New Orleans, Louisiana, displayed his amazing talents as a trumpeter, cornet player, and singer during the Jazz Age. He studied and played with a famed cornet player named Joseph â€Å"King Oliver† Oliver (1885 – 1938).In 1925, â€Å"Satchmo,† (his nickname) who had learned to play cornet at the age of twelve, started The Hot Fives. The band would later gain two more musicians and was appropriately renamed The Hot Sevens. He did not restrict his talents to just music, however. He also starred in films such as Pennies from Heaven. He continued working in the last three years of his life, most of which was spent in hospitals. He died at home on July 6, 1971. Some of the many artists of that time also included Duke Ellington (1899 – 1974), Joseph â€Å"King Oliver† Oliver (1885 – 1938), Bessie Smith (1894? 1937), Benny Goodma n (1909 – 1986), and Ma Rainey. ? Conclusion: The Roaring Twenties: a golden age for American Music and dance The Roaring Twenties period has long been considered a golden era of American society; the standard of living was rising, morality was being re-defined, innovation and business was soaring, and the general public perceived that times were good. It has been considered also as a golden age for the music and entertainment industry such as dance, theatre and film industry. Definition: The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement that spanned the 1920s and 1930s. At the time, it was known as the â€Å"New Negro Movement†, named after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. Though it was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, many French-speaking black writers from African and Caribbean colonies who lived in Paris were also influenced by the Harlem Renaissance. buy custom Modified Lesson Plan essay

buy custom Modified Lesson Plan essay Having the opportunity to work in the education system I have had to encounter various challenges among them, the constant need to change my lesson plans to accommodate students with special disabilities. A practical case would be dealing with a student who possesses emotional disability and in particular attention deficiency. The student is has difficulty in establishing lasting relations with the colleagues as he has the inability to control his emotional feelings the student is also seen to be hyperactive. As a result the student has difficulty following simple instructions, cannot associate with the other students as he cannot even play well. The student has emotional setbacks at times seen to be quiet while at other times he is excessively active and talks relatively too much. Other observable features include, being easily distracted, cannot wait for his turn to play or talk and as a result interrupts the lesson and meetings. The students inability to remain attentive for long periods and the low concentration level can be associated to his hearing disability a condition that adds up to the already hyperactive student. Changes in the lesson plan that would be incorporated in an art class would include instructional chages as well as the acquisition and use of an assistive technology device. The instructional changes would be to have the instructions given to the students short and concise. The instructions would incorporate behavioral requirements to the student requiring a certain standard of conduct that would be awarded if achieved. The change in the lesson plan would also incorporate assigning the class session a period when the students concentration span is at the highest while at the same time limiting the amount of workload during this time achievable if the class sessions are segmented into periods that are manageable to the student. The instructional and teaching mode will enable the student concentrate more and as a result avoid the hyperactivity and the intrusions of the lesson by the student. To deal with the mild hearing impairment, having pictorial representations of the instructions required of the student. The pictorial representations would include materials such as diagrams, flowcharts and models. The assistive technology is an assistive technology that involves the use of objects that can be easily recognized by the student especially those easily available to the student in the home set up. The lesson plan would include hhaving tape recorders in certain sections of the lesson. The purpose of having the tape recorders would be to record the instructions I would be giving to the students and have the recorder played by the students at intervals selected as the lesson progresses. This would allow the students to recall the instructions and also act as a constant reminder to the student to give chances to the other students in playing the recorder an aspect that would hopefully be carried on to the playground. The uses of flowcharts as an assistive technology in delivering the lesson would assist the student organize their thinking and actions in addition to tackling the hearing impairment. This would mean that certain lesson is delivered with the aid or the sole use of flowcharts. An additional assistive device that would be incorporated in the lesson would be to have students have note taking devices such as books and laptops. The gargets would require the student to make effort in putting down what is taught and what he understands from the lesson. As a teacher the delivery of the lesson need be slower to give time for note taking. This aids in concentration and allows for easy evaluation of the areas the student learnt and areas where little was learnt. Buy custom Modified Lesson Plan essay

Calculating and Understanding Real Interest Rates

Calculating and Understanding Real Interest Rates Finance is riddled with terms that can make the uninitiated scratch their heads. Real variables and nominal variables are a good example. Whats the difference? A nominal variable is one that doesnt incorporate or consider the effects of inflation. A real variable factors in these effects. Some Examples For illustrative purposes, lets say that youve purchased a one-year bond for face value that pays six percent at the end of the year. Youd pay $100 at the beginning of the year and get $106 at the end because of that six percent rate, which is nominal because it doesnt account for inflation. When people speak of interest rates, theyre typically talking about nominal rates.   So what happens if the inflation rate is three percent that year? You can buy a basket of goods today for $100, or you can wait until next year when it will cost $103. If you buy the bond in the above scenario with a six percent nominal interest rate, then sell it after a year for $106 and buy a basket of goods for $103, youd have $3 left. How to Calculate the Real Interest Rate   Start with the following consumer price index (CPI) and nominal interest rate data: CPI Data Year 1: 100Year 2: 110Year 3: 120Year 4: 115 Nominal Interest Rate Data Year 1: Year 2: 15%Year 3: 13%Year 4: 8% How can you figure out what the real interest rate is for years two, three, and four? Begin by identifying these notations:  i means inflation rate,  n is the nominal interest rate  and  r is the real interest rate.   You must know the inflation rate - or the expected inflation rate if youre making a prediction about the future. You can calculate this from the CPI data using the following formula: i [CPI(this year) – CPI(last year)] / CPI(last year) So the inflation rate in year two  is [110 – 100]/100 .1 10%. If you do this for all three years, youd get the following: Inflation Rate Data Year 1: Year 2: 10.0%Year 3: 9.1%Year 4: -4.2% Now you can calculate the real interest rate. The relationship between the inflation rate and the nominal and real interest rates is given by the expression (1r)(1n)/(1i), but you can use the much simpler Fisher Equation  for lower levels of inflation.   FISHER EQUATION: r n – i Using this simple formula,  you can calculate the real interest rate for years two  through four.   Real Interest Rate (r n – i) Year 1: Year 2: 15% - 10.0% 5.0%Year 3: 13% - 9.1% 3.9%Year 4: 8% - (-4.2%) 12.2% So the real interest rate is 5 percent in year 2, 3.9 percent in year 3, and a whopping 12.2 percent in year four.   Is This Deal Good or Bad?   Lets say that youre offered the following deal:  You lend $200 to a friend at the beginning of year two and charge him the 15 percent nominal interest rate. He pays you $230 at the end of year two.   Should you make this loan? Youll earn a real interest rate of five percent if you do. Five percent of $200 is $10, so youll be financially ahead by making the deal, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you should. It depends on whats most important to you: Getting $200 worth of goods at year two prices at the beginning of year two or getting $210 worth of goods, also at year two prices, at the beginning of year three. Theres no right answer. It depends on how much you value consumption or happiness today compared to consumption or happiness one year from now. Economists refer to this as a person’s discount factor. The Bottom Line   If you know what the inflation rate is going to be, real interest rates can be a powerful tool in judging the value of an investment. They take into account how inflation erodes purchasing power.

E-Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

E-Marketing - Essay Example This essay is a critical evaluation of their entry strategy and also an analysis of their entry strategy with models included to improve their strategy regarding e-marketing. Amazon is an American based company situated in Seattle, Washington. It was the first leading e-commerce company that successfully sold products online. The company was booming until the downfall of the IT industry in 1990’s and it had to face serious criticism from all sides. But the company faced the tests of time and emerged victorious after making a profit again in 2003. The founder of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos started this company in 1995 as only an online book store but gradually the company diversified into new product categories. Amazon is now a virtual multinational since it has its separate websites in many companies around the world, namely; Japan, U.K. Germany, Austria, France, Canada and China. The site is accessible worldwide and it is a global company that is capable of shipping products all around the globe. Today Amazon is a huge name in the e-commerce industry and also a leading company in its genre. Currently, the company has been vying to enter into e-marketi ng that is selling products digitally over the internet instead of shipping them to every part of the globe. Since the company’s business model has always been swarmed with the shipping mania, it is now taking the conversion from traditional marketing to e-marketing very slowly so that business is fully integrated with no unit left behind and finally gushing towards the prime position successfully. They are still developing as an e-marketing firm and moving steadily to their desired destination. Amazon entered the market with the acquisition of mobipockets.com which is based in Paris. Amazon adopted a hush hush attitude towards the acquisition of the company that is now its subsidiary that sells products digitally online. It provides books online as a download for some

Reading response Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 21

Reading response - Essay Example The Allies were forced to sign off as post First World War the allies were dependent on the United States for not only military and arms but also for fuel, food and other basic requirements. However, only some of the Wilson 14 points made it to acceptance particularly five of them the rest were rejected on the event of being overly ambitious and unrealistic. The impracticality of these points dominated the Great European powers and the experiences of wartime. Apart from the Russian evacuation and the Belgium restoration the other points created more negative vibe than positive effects. For example, the settlement of colonial claims, the French disputed territories; the Italy border adjustments based on nationality etc. all caused more tension and new national disputes rather than solving any problems. Thus not all the points presented by the President were fruitful in generating world peace. The most important point in my view and according to the historical perspective is the last point. ‘Establishment of the League of Nations to secure mutual guarantees of independence and territorial integrity.’ ("President Wilsons Fourteen Points"). This League of Nations was formed through the start of the Second World War and aimed at diluting national sovereignty and creating global and international government. However, this did not materialize as per the speech but this point was the backbone of the 14 points speech by the President Wilson in

Meaning and the Symbolical Features of Organisations Essay

Meaning and the Symbolical Features of Organisations - Essay Example The narratives, which is also referred to as organizational stories, sagas, and myths, work to guide members in understanding and representing the organization’s objective and the function of its members. The organizational narrative gives information about ideologies and standards, and it plays several roles in an organization—resolving gaps between the past and the present, moderating power relations, prevention of conflict, and reconciliation of tensions between individual and organizational interests (Gabriel, 2000, p.10). This essay discusses the relationship between narrative and heritage. A narrative in Organisations There is seven types of narrative that have been observed to occur in various organizations. First are narratives about how the organisation solves problems; second are narratives about how the person in charge or the manager responds to mistakes; third are stories addressing the issue of how much assistance or support an organisation will give to it s people when they have to transfer regularly; fourth are narratives about how an organisation acts when confronted with the likelihood of laying off or discharging employees (Czarniawska, 1998, pp. 2-3); fifth is a narrative about the likelihood of a praiseworthy employee being recognised or rewarded by the organisation; sixth is a narrative about the level of respect and compassion the manager shows in relation to his/her subordinates; and seventh is a narrative about breaking the rules wherein a senior manager violates a rule which his/her subordinate should then implement (Czarniawska, 1998, p. 3). Every narrative has good and bad versions, which always reveal the conflicts that develop from a tension between individual values and organizational interests. These conflicts relate to the problems of control vs. chaos, stability vs. instability, and equality vs. hierarchy within the organization (Lipman, 1999, p. 22). When these narratives or events come together to form a broader or more complete narrative, the central identity or purpose is formed. This central narrative consolidates events and experiences into a main interpretative system for the organization. In an article of the Administrative Quarterly Review, dedicated to the discussion of organizational culture, several organizational experts talked about techniques they have created for explaining the interpretative structures that work at more profound aspects of an organization (Polkinghorne, 1988, p. 122). For instance, as a support for planning and dealing with problems, Mitroff and Killman encouraged bosses to relate stories about an organization; afterward, they grouped them in accordance to the Jungian personality styles.

Rbs staff grievance procedure INTRODUCTION Grievance is a complaint held by a member of staff against the RBS as an employer, including a grievance against another member of staff acting on behalf of the RBS. The Vice Chancellor may delegate this stage of the procedure to the appropriate Pro Vice Chancellor. The conduct of the hearing shall be: Both the aggrieved member of staff and the member of staff against whom the grievance is made. if any facts are in dispute, either or both parties may nominate witnesses and they can accompany them in the hearing but they should be the member of the staff only. 19. The decision of the Vice Chancellor will be the final say in the case and will be notified to the member of staff within five working days of the hearing. Please note: If the grievance is against the Vice Chancellor personally the aggrieved member of staff may submit a written statement of grievance to the Chairman of the Board of Governors through the Secretary to the Board. Eulogy for Friend :: Eulogies Eulogy

Eulogy for Friend Yesterday, as Martin's friends poured into town, I was struck by how many distinct sets of friends he had. Family, skaters, punks, his Swampland posse, his boys and his girls, Professors, colleagues, Ann Arbor friends, Chicago friends, cyberspace friends who'd never met him "in the flesh"... Trying to walk down the street with him was an exercise in frustration, as Martin's fans flocked to him like the Pied Piper. He was so much, to so many. One of his greatest gifts to us is each other. I remember the first time I saw Marty 12 years ago. You couldn't miss him, of course. It was Computer Science 101, a lecture hall with hundreds of students. He would skate into class 20 minutes late, flip his skateboard up onto his desk, crack open a chocolate milk and begin to drink... 200 eyes on him. Martin would turn around and give us a little wave. The thing was, and it *clearly* pissed off the Professors, he routinely scored the highest marks in the class on every assignment. Immediately I said to myself, "I need to know this guy..." So I cornered him and announced, "You and I are going to be friends..." Martin looked me up and down and said, "Uh....No thanks..." And so it began. Martin, in those days especially, had an approach to people that was at best "challenging", & at worst confrontational. Those who didn't "get" Martin brushed him off as a clown, but to those who watched, and listened, it was clear there was something extremely profound going on. Martin had an uncanny ability to see into people, to look through you, to reflect your own insecurities and hangups back at you, until you had no choice left but to drop them... and dance with him. Martin called your bluff every time... Despite his best efforts to the contrary, eventually we did become friends. I simply refused to let him go, or to let him push me away... I knew in my core that if being Martin's friend required change, well then I'd change. He was worth it... Martin was a hacker in the true MIT tradition. As a teenager, and Marty didn't often brag about this, he reengineered some communication software into what became the de facto standard for software pirates around the world. In those days he was known by his handle, the "Redheaded Freak".
